WELCOME
Welcome to my 3rd Grade Reading and Language Arts page.

This year we are excited to be using a new reading series called Reading Streets.  Each week we will be focusing on a story and how it relates to our unit theme.  Right now, our theme is "Smart Solutions".  Each week a decodable reader will be sent home for the students to practice the phonics skills and reading of the story with an adult.  On Monday and Wednesday night I ask that parents sign off in the homework planner that they have sat with their child and helped them practice.  It is a great way to discuss the story and practice new words.  You also may want to ask questions about specific things that happened in the story.  Our main story for the week is in our big textbook that is in our classroom.  The main items of the story will be discussed and reviewed in class.  Unfortunately, books will not be sent home.  I have included a link for students to practice stories that I have assigned in their free time. Also, there are additional copies of the textbook at our Brigantine Library on 14th Street.  266-0110

In Language Arts, we are working on various skills related to our Reading series.  On Monday's, a homework sheet is sent home with various items for students to practice each night.  I ask that they rewrite the sentences that needed to be edited.  We then check them over in class together the next day. Each day, I have the students write in their homework planner.  Please check to see what has been assigned.  Have them show you their planner and have them check off what they have completed.  The planner needs to be with the student everyday.

The beginning of each week 4 things will go home for Reading and Language Arts.  Please look for them in your child's Reading and Language Arts folder.  The 4 things are:
                          1. Family Times handout- this handout has information about our story for the week and the skills that we will be focusing on.  It also has a list of the corresponding vocabulary words with definitions.  Please keep this handy during the week so that you can study the words each night.
                          2. Letter with the spelling words and phonics skill words also for practice.
                          3. The weekly warm-up homework for Language Arts.
                          4. The decodable reader story.  On Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday, and Thursday I ask the students to read this story with an adult and then have the adult sign their planner.  In reading this story, students will practice the phonics skill for the week.  It is a great time for you to ask questions about the story or have your child make up an alternate ending.  Have fun with it!!

If you have any questions, you may email me or contact me at the school 264-9501 and I will return your call within 24 hours.  Thank you
